Rolls-Royce
Phantom V

By James Young ~ coachbuilders

1962

Here is a really stunning looking Rolls-Royce Phantom V by James Young finished in all over white with beautiful contrasting tan Connolly Vaumol leather hides. The twin fine lines to the waist-rails and hubcap beauty rings are hand-painted in tan to match the interior.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom V made its debut at the Earl’s Court Motor Show in 1959, replacing the previous Rolls-Royce limousine, the Silver Wraith, which had been living on borrowed time since the introduction of the Silver Cloud in 1955. The four-year delay was deemed necessary by Rolls-Royce Limited, as they had already planned on introducing their now legendary light alloy V8 engine across the range at that time.

With a wheelbase of 12ft 1in, and an overall length of just a hair under 20ft, the Phantom V chassis had been planned from the outset to carry coachbuilt bodies that were imposing and graceful, with really spacious interiors and large luggage carrying capacity. The powerful V8 engine, 4-speed automatic transmission, servo-assisted brakes and power-assisted steering made the car feel considerably smaller than its size. With its lower 3.89:1 axle ratio, the Phantom V could glide along at walking pace, or reach speeds in excess of 100mph with ease.

516 Phantom Vs were built between 1959 and 1968, when it was superseded by the slightly modified Phantom VI.

The vast majority of cars were provided with coachwork by Park Ward, H J Mulliner, and the later combined firm of Mulliner Park Ward. A total of 196 were bodied by James Young Ltd in either 7-passenger or touring limousine styles.

Chassis number 5VA17 was delivered in November 1962 to John Bloom of Electromatic Washing Machines Ltd with Design No PV22 Touring Limousine coachwork by James Young. Beautifully styled
by A F “Mac” McNeill, his creations for James Young coachwork on the Phantom V are regarded as some of the most beautiful and elegant designs of all time. James Young touring limousine coachwork, as on this magnificent car, is the most graceful, and is considered to be the epitome Phantom V.

This Phantom V is very well known to us having recently been mechanically serviced and maintained to a very high standard. Everything and anything needed to be done has been done so without sparing expense. Every service is completely up to date. Some $30,000 has been spent on front suspension, steering, the entire braking system, cooling system and operational features to include AC, electric windows, all interior and exterior lighting.

The body of the car presents straight and the paint in good condition. It was all repainted at some point and although no show piece (very high driver quality), she does present well, clean, lustrous and consistent. There are hardly any notable chips and marks other than very minor ones here and there but these are few and only show if one looks hard. There is some sign of repair under the rear bumper valance that is "so-so" but only noticeable from the underside upon close inspection. Otherwise she is clean underneath. Overall she is very shiny without any fading, dents or dings. Mouldings, badges and external fittings are all in excellent condition.

The interior of this car is stunning. The Connolly Vaumol leather shows beautifully and is original. It remains very soft and supple without any signs of extraordinary wear and teh natural patina is to die for. There is nothing like original, well-aged Connolly leather. The detailed wood-work throughout is excellent and the richness in colour, grain and layout is really quite breath-taking. The photos say all! There are areas showing some cracks, chips or marks but in the overall presentation, we believe it presents perfectly with good patina.

The accoutrements in the division are a delightful touch with pic-nic tables that reveal a mirror for both rear passengers, cocktail glasses of different types on each side and a centre cocktail cabinet that serves all. The very art deco style Smith's clock is simply gorgeous. In the centre armrest there are personal accoutrements to include a brush and comb set. There are also cubbies with sliding covers in all four doors.

Carpets, seats, dash, front top-roll, rear parcel shelf and fixtures are truly excellent and I best encourage you to look at all the photos to fully appreciate how nicely the interior presents.

As mentioned previoulsy, this car has had a considerably amount of money spent on her to make her mechanically strong - which she is. On the brakes alone; all new drums, shoes, springs, wheel cylinders, hoses, servo rebuilt, new reservoirs with all new fluids. Brand new period correct "pie-crust" 8.90-15 whitewall tyres were just fitted. All windows work well as does the division. Front and rear AC is working. The heater was not attended to as part of the maintenance scope of work but all other electricals and features & functions have been inspected so everything is operating as it should; windows, seats, mirrors, A/C, lights, wipers, etc. Right down to every light bulb in the dash. This is a true, "take the keys and drive" example.

Being a well-maintained example. It is tight to drive, brakes strong and rides as a Rolls-Royce Phantom V should.

~~ This very elegant Rolls-Royce Phantom V by James Young is a lovely example which is the epitome of the Rolls-Royce marque of the era!
It makes for a wonderful addition to any collection or simply for private enjoyment ~~

~~International buyers always welcome ~ we have sold and shipped 100's world-wide.~~
